It is home to the Ribault Inn Club<\/a>, constructed in 1928 as a winter resort and now used as a visitor’s center. \u00a0The 46,000-acre (190\u00a0km2<\/sup>) Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve<\/a>, in Jacksonville<\/a>, Florida<\/a> is nearby. Fort George has the highest point along the Atlantic coast south of Sandy Hook, New Jersey<\/a>, and contains Timucua<\/a>oyster shell mounds<\/a>. The park is part of the Talbot Islands GEOpark complex.<\/p>\n The park contains features that represent distinct periods in history. During the early historical period Fort George Island was known as Alicamani. It was the location of the village of Alicamani, a major village of the Timucua<\/a> chiefdom known as the Saturiwa<\/a>. Timucua influence is noted by the presence of middens, large mounds consisting of massive quantities of shells and discarded food byproducts. On Fort George Island, the shells were primarily oysters<\/a>. The island was later home to the Spanish mission<\/a> of San Juan del Puerto<\/a><\/i>, the primary mission to the Saturiwa.<\/p>\n Under British rule in 1765, colonists developed a plantation<\/a> on the island. It is now known as Kingsley Plantation<\/a>, after Zephaniah Kingsley<\/a>, who held it for 25 years. The main house, kitchen and numerous slave quarters have survived.<\/p>\n Activities include off-road bicycling, hiking, boating, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. Amenities include a 4.4-mile (7.1\u00a0km)-long loop bicycle trail, boat ramp, a 3-mile (4.8\u00a0km) hiking\/biking trail, and a beach. The park is open from 8:00 am until sundown year-round.<\/p>\n Kingsley Plantation<\/b> (also known as the Zephaniah Kingsley Plantation Home and Buildings<\/b>) is the site of a former estate in Jacksonville, Florida<\/a>, that was named for an early owner, Zephaniah Kingsley<\/a>, who spent 25 years there. It is located at the northern tip of Fort George Island<\/a> at Fort George Inlet, and is part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve<\/a> managed by the U.S. National Park Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n The plantation<\/a> was originally 1,000 acres (4.0\u00a0km2<\/sup>), most of which has been taken over by forest; the structures and grounds of the park now comprise approximately 60 acres (242,811.385\u00a0m2<\/sup>).[2]<\/a><\/sup>Evidence of Pre-Columbian Timucua<\/a> life is on the island, as are the remains of a Spanish mission<\/a>named San Juan del Puerto<\/i>. Under British rule in 1765, a plantation was established that cycled through several owners while Florida was transferred back to Spain and then the United States. The longest span of ownership was under Kingsley and his family, a polygamous<\/a> and multiracial<\/a> household controlled by and resistant to the issues of race and slavery<\/a>.<\/p>\n Free blacks and several private owners lived at the plantation until it was transferred to the State of Florida in 1955. It was acquired by the National Park Service in 1991. The most prominent features of Kingsley Plantation are the owner’s house\u2014a structure of architectural significance built probably between 1797 and 1798 that is cited as being the oldest surviving plantation house<\/a> in the state[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u2014and an attached kitchen house, barn, and remains of 25 anthropologically<\/a> valuable slave cabins that endured beyond the U.S. Civil War<\/a> (1861\u20131865). The foundations of the house, kitchen, barn and the slave quarters were constructed of cement tabby<\/a>, making them notably durable. Archeological evidence found in and around the slave cabins has given researchers insight into African traditions among slaves who had recently arrived in North America.<\/p>\n Zephaniah Kingsley wrote a defense of slavery and the three-tier social system that acknowledged the rights of free people of color that existed in Florida under Spanish rule. Kingsley briefly served on the Florida Territorial Council<\/a>, planning the transition when Florida was annexed by the United States. During his time on the council, he attempted to influence Florida lawmakers to recognize free people of color and allow mixed-race children to inherit property. In addition to the architectural qualities, the site is significant as his home and that of his unique family.<\/p>\n MAYPORT, Florida<\/p>\n Mayport<\/b> is a small community located between Naval Station Mayport<\/a> and the St. Johns River<\/a> in Jacksonville, Florida<\/a>. \u00a0It is part of the Jacksonville Beaches<\/a> communities. The only public road to Mayport is State Road A1A<\/a>, which crosses the St. Johns River Ferry<\/a> to Fort George Island<\/a>.<\/p>\n Naval Station Mayport<\/b> (IATA<\/a>: NRB<\/b>, ICAO<\/a>: KNRB<\/b>, FAA<\/a> LID<\/a>: NRB<\/b>) is a major United States Navy<\/a> base in Jacksonville, Florida<\/a>. It contains a protected harbor that can accommodate aircraft carrier-size vessels, ship’s intermediate maintenance activity (SIMA) and a military airfield<\/a> (Admiral<\/a> David L. McDonald<\/a> Field) with one asphalt<\/a> paved runway<\/a> (5\/23) measuring 8,001\u00a0ft \u00d7\u00a0200\u00a0ft (2,439\u00a0m \u00d7\u00a061\u00a0m).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The base has historically served as the homeport to various conventionally powered aircraft carriers of the United States Atlantic Fleet, including Shangri-La<\/i><\/a>(1960\u20131971), Franklin D. Roosevelt<\/i><\/a> (1956\u20131977), Forrestal<\/i><\/a> (1977\u20131993), Saratoga<\/i><\/a> (1957\u20131994), and, most recently, John F. Kennedy<\/i><\/a> (1995\u20132007). With the decommissioning of all conventionally-powered aircraft carriers by the U.S. Navy, no carriers are presently assigned to Mayport. However, both houses of Congress<\/a> have passed legislation authorizing about US$75 million for dredging and upgrades at NAVSTA Mayport to accommodate a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.<\/p>\n On January 29, 2010, the Quadrennial Defense Review Report<\/i> stated that a nuclear aircraft carrier would be homeported at NAVSTA Mayport. The action will help protect the fleet against a potential terror attack, accident or natural disaster, because all east coast aircraft carriers are currently based at Naval Station Norfolk<\/a>, Virginia, according to the report. West coast aircraft carriers are split between Naval Air Station North Island<\/a> in San Diego, California<\/a>, Naval Base Kitsap<\/a> and Naval Station Everett<\/a> in Washington state and one carrier assigned to the Forward Deployed Naval Force (FDNF) homeported at Naval Base Yokosuka<\/a>, Japan.<\/p>\n In 2009 Robert Gates<\/a>, Secretary of Defense<\/a>, stated, “Having a single (nuclear carrier) homeport has not been considered acceptable on the west coast and should not be considered acceptable on the east coast.” \u00a0\u00a0The decision was opposed by elected officials in Virginia, \u00a0\u00a0who would lose 3,500 sailors and their dependents, $425 million in revenue each year, and most importantly, 6,000 support jobs. \u00a0\u00a0The Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce estimated the loss at 11,000 jobs and $650 million per year. \u00a0\u00a0Infrastructure changes and facility construction at Mayport are estimated to take five years and cost over half a billion dollars. The 2011 budget commits $590 million during the fiscal years from 2011 to 2019, so a carrier may not move to Mayport until 2019. \u00a0\u00a0However, an amphibious group is coming sooner.
