Prehistory<\/span><\/h3>\n

The first Paleo-Indians<\/a> reached the central Florida area near the end of the last ice age<\/a>, as they followed big game south. \u00a0\u00a0As the ice melted and sea levels rose, these Native Americans ended up staying and thrived on the peninsula for thousands of years. By the time the first Spanish conquistadors<\/a>arrived, there were over 250,000 Native Americans living on the peninsula. The Calusa<\/a> were a historic tribe across the north central area of Florida, where Trenton later developed.<\/p>\n

Within 150 years, the majority of the pre-Columbian<\/a>Native American peoples of Florida died of new infectious diseases or warfare, with their societies disrupted. Some were enslaved by the Spaniards, and died because of harsh treatment. \u00a0\u00a0Little is left of these first Native American cultures in Trenton except for scant archeological records, including a few personal artifacts. By the early 19th century, the remnants of these tribes merged with the Bell Indians, Muscogee<\/a> (also known as Creek) who migrated from Georgia and Alabama. They created a new culture through ethnogenesis<\/a> and became known as the Seminole people<\/a>. \u00a0\u00a0Most of the Seminole were removed from central Florida by the United States after wars from the 1830s to 1842, while some resisted by moving south into the Everglades and survived.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

Trenton<\/b> is a city in Gilchrist County<\/a>, Florida<\/a>, United States. The population was 1,999 as of the 2010 census<\/a>,\u00a0and in 2018 it was estimated to be 2,125. \u00a0\u00a0It is the county seat<\/a> of Gilchrist County.<\/p>\n

Gilchrist County<\/b> is a small rural county<\/a>located in the U.S. state<\/a> of Florida<\/a>. Organized in 1925 from the western part of Alachua<\/a>, it is the last county to be formed in the state. As of the 2010 census<\/a>, the population was 16,939. \u00a0The county seat<\/a> is Trenton<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Gilchrist County was created in 1925, the last county organized in Florida. It was named for Albert W. Gilchrist<\/a>, Governor of Florida<\/a> from 1909 to 1913. It was formed by residents of what was then western Alachua County, as they believed they were not getting adequate representation on the county commission. With the poor roads of the time, they felt it took too long to get to the county seat of Gainesville. They disagreed about a proposed law that would require fencing in cattle in the rural area. They also believed that they would be better off by getting their own share of racetrack revenues, which the state distributed by county.<\/p>\n

Much of the county was farmland and timberland when formed, and it is largely rural. It has some natural springs, and its park, Hart Springs, is developed around some. The county also has nature trails.<\/p>\n
