Located on Amelia Island, known as the &#8220;Isle of 8 Flags&#8221;, Fernandina has had the flags of the following nations flown over it since 1562: <a title=\"France\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/France\">France<\/a>, <a title=\"Spain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spain\">Spain<\/a>, <a title=\"Great Britain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Britain\">Great Britain<\/a>, Spain (again), the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Republic of Florida\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republic_of_Florida\">Republic of Florida<\/a>, the <a title=\"Gregor MacGregor\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gregor_MacGregor\">Green Cross of Florida<\/a>, <a title=\"Mexico\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mexico\">Mexico<\/a>, the <a title=\"Confederate States of America\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Confederate_States_of_America\">Confederate States of America<\/a>, and the <a title=\"United States\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\">United States<\/a>. It is the only municipality in the United States that has flown eight different national flags.<\/p>\n<p>Europeans on what is now Amelia Island, Native Americans occupied the site of the <a title=\"Original Town of Fernandina Historic Site\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Original_Town_of_Fernandina_Historic_Site\">original town<\/a> of Fernandina. \u00a0Native American bands associated with the Timucuan mound-building culture had settled on the island about A.D. 1000, calling it Napoyca. They remained on the island until the early 18th century, when European settlement began.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"in-block\"><span id=\"French_and_Spanish_Settlement\" class=\"mw-headline\">French and Spanish Settlement<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>French Huguenot explorer <a title=\"Jean Ribault\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jean_Ribault\">Jean Ribault<\/a> became the first recorded European visitor to Napoyca in 1562, which he named <a title=\"St. Johns River\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St._Johns_River#Colonial_era\">Isle de Mai<\/a>. In 1565, Spanish forces led by <a title=\"Pedro Men\u00e9ndez de Avil\u00e9s\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pedro_Men%C3%A9ndez_de_Avil%C3%A9s\">Pedro Men\u00e9ndez de Avil\u00e9s<\/a> drove the French from northeastern Florida, killing Ribault and approximately 350 other French colonists. In 1573, Spanish Franciscans established the Santa Maria mission on the island, which they called <i>Isla de Santa Maria<\/i>. The mission was abandoned in 1680 after the inhabitants refused a Spanish order to relocate. British raids forced the relocation of the <a title=\"Santa Catalina de Guale\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Santa_Catalina_de_Guale\">Santa Catalina de Guale<\/a> mission on Georgia&#8217;s <a title=\"St. Catherines Island\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St._Catherines_Island\">St. Catherines Island<\/a>, to the abandoned Santa Maria mission on the island in 1685. In 1702, this mission was again abandoned when South Carolina&#8217;s colonial governor, <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"James Moore (South Carolina politician)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Moore_(South_Carolina_politician)\">James Moore<\/a>, led a joint British-Indian invasion of Florida.<\/p>\n<p>Georgia&#8217;s founder and colonial governor, <a title=\"James Oglethorpe\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Oglethorpe\">James Oglethorpe<\/a>, renamed the island &#8220;Amelia Island&#8221; in honor of <a title=\"Princess Amelia of Great Britain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Princess_Amelia_of_Great_Britain\">Princess Amelia<\/a> (1711\u20131786), King George II&#8217;s daughter, although the island was still a Spanish possession. In 1736, <a title=\"James Oglethorpe\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Oglethorpe\">James Oglethorpe<\/a>, the governor of Georgia, ordered Fort Amelia to be built at the mouth of the <a title=\"St. Marys River (Florida\u2013Georgia)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St._Marys_River_(Florida%E2%80%93Georgia)\">St. Marys River<\/a> to house a garrison of Scottish Highlanders. \u00a0After establishing a small settlement on the northwestern edge of the island, Oglethorpe negotiated with Spanish colonial officials for a transfer of the island to British sovereignty. Colonial officials agreed to the transfer, but the King of Spain rescinded the agreement.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"in-block\"><span id=\"British_Possession\" class=\"mw-headline\">British Possession\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The <a title=\"Treaty of Paris (1763)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Treaty_of_Paris_(1763)\">Treaty of Paris in 1763<\/a> ratified Britain&#8217;s victory over France in the <a title=\"Seven Years' War\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seven_Years%27_War\">Seven Years&#8217; War<\/a>. Spain ceded Florida to Britain in exchange for <a title=\"Havana\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Havana\">Havana<\/a>, nullifying all Spanish land grants in Florida. The Proclamation of 1763 established the St. Marys River as East Florida&#8217;s northeastern boundary.<\/p>\n<p>Although not officially allied with the Americans during the Revolutionary War, \u00a0Spain cooperated with them as co-belligerents against the British in some actions. \u00a0In 1783, the <a title=\"Treaty of Paris (1783)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Treaty_of_Paris_(1783)\">Second Treaty of Paris<\/a>ended hostilities, and under its terms Great Britain ceded East and <a title=\"West Florida\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West_Florida\">West Florida<\/a> to Spain, and all British inhabitants of the Floridas, including those on Amelia Island, had to leave within 18 months unless they swore allegiance to Spain and professed Catholicism.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"in-block\"><span id=\"Old_Town_Fernandina\" class=\"mw-headline\">Old Town Fernandina<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>On January 1, 1811, <a title=\"Enrique White\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Enrique_White\">Enrique White<\/a>, governor of Spain&#8217;s <a title=\"East Florida\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/East_Florida\">East Florida<\/a> province, named the town of Fernandina, about a mile from the present city, in honor of <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"King Ferdinand VII\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/King_Ferdinand_VII\">King Ferdinand VII<\/a>. On May 10 of that year,\u00a0Fernandina became the last town platted under the <a title=\"Laws of the Indies\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laws_of_the_Indies\">Laws of the Indies<\/a> in the Western hemisphere. The town was intended as a bulwark against U.S. territorial expansion. In the following years, it was captured and recaptured by a succession of renegades and privateers.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"in-block\"><span id=\"Republic_of_East_Florida\" class=\"mw-headline\">Republic of East Florida<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>At the beginning of the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Florida Seminole Wars\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Florida_Seminole_Wars#Patriot_War_of_East_Florida\">Patriot War<\/a>, with the approval of President <a title=\"James Madison\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Madison\">James Madison<\/a> and <a title=\"Georgia (U.S. state)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Georgia_(U.S._state)\">Georgia<\/a>Governor <a title=\"George Mathews (Georgia)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Mathews_(Georgia)\">George Mathews<\/a> on March 13, 1812, \u00a0insurgents known as the &#8220;Patriots of Amelia Island&#8221; seized the island. After raising a Patriot flag, they replaced it with the <a title=\"Flag Acts (United States)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flag_Acts_(United_States)#Flag_Act_of_1794\">United States flag<\/a>. American gunboats under the command of <a title=\"Commodore (United States)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Commodore_(United_States)\">Commodore<\/a> <a class=\"new\" title=\"Hugh Campbell (sailor) (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Hugh_Campbell_(sailor)&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Hugh Campbell<\/a> maintained control of the island. On May 15, 1812, the British brig. <a title=\"HMS Sappho (1806)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HMS_Sappho_(1806)\"><i>Sappho<\/i><\/a> fired on Gunboat no. 168, which had fired on the loyalist merchant vessel <i>Fernando<\/i> to prevent her leaving. Outgunned, the American gunboat withdrew, which enabled several vessels to escape from the port. President Madison eventually denounced the filibustering of George Mathews, however, on the grounds that Mathews had violated his instructions.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"in-block\"><span id=\"Mexico\" class=\"mw-headline\">Mexico<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Spanish pressure forced the American evacuation from the island in 1813. Spanish forces erected <a title=\"Fort San Carlos\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fort_San_Carlos\">Fort San Carlos<\/a> on the island in 1816. However, A Scottish soldier and adventurer named <a title=\"Gregor MacGregor\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gregor_MacGregor\">Gregor MacGregor<\/a> with 55 musketeers seized <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Fort San Carlos (Fernandina, Florida)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fort_San_Carlos_(Fernandina,_Florida)\">Fort San Carlos<\/a> in 1817, claiming the island on behalf of &#8220;the brethren of Mexico, Buenos Ayres, New Grenada and Venezuela&#8221;. \u00a0\u00a0MacGregor claimed to be Brigadier General of the armies of the United Provinces of New Grenada and Venezuela (where he had successfully fought and led troops), and General-in-Chief of the armies for the two Floridas, commissioned by the Supreme Director of Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>Spanish soldiers forced MacGregor&#8217;s withdrawal, but their attempt to regain complete control was foiled by American irregulars organized by Ruggles Hubbard and former Pennsylvania congressman <a title=\"Jared Irwin (Pennsylvania)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jared_Irwin_(Pennsylvania)\">Jared Irwin<\/a>. Hubbard and Irwin later joined forces with the French-born pirate <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Louis Aury\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_Aury\">Louis Aury<\/a>, who laid claim to the island on behalf of the Republic of Mexico. U.S. Navy forces drove Aury from the island, and President <a title=\"James Monroe\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Monroe\">James Monroe<\/a> vowed to hold Amelia Island &#8220;in trust for Spain.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"in-block\"><span id=\"Modern_Fernandina\" class=\"mw-headline\">Modern Fernandina<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In 1847 construction of <a title=\"Fort Clinch\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fort_Clinch\">Fort Clinch<\/a> began in nearby present-day Fernandina. The Third System fort was named after General <a title=\"Duncan Lamont Clinch\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duncan_Lamont_Clinch\">Duncan Lamont Clinch<\/a> who fought in the <a title=\"War of 1812\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/War_of_1812\">War of 1812<\/a> and the <a title=\"Seminole Wars\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seminole_Wars\">Seminole Wars<\/a>. Senator <a title=\"David Levy Yulee\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Levy_Yulee\">David Levy Yulee<\/a>, founder of the <a title=\"Florida Railroad\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Florida_Railroad\">Florida Railroad<\/a>, wanted the eastern terminus of his railroad line to end in <a title=\"Amelia Island\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amelia_Island\">Amelia Island<\/a>. The Old Town Fernandina was too cut off by the marshes to be used as a terminal. Yulee wanted to end the railroad on the banks of the Amelia River one mile to the south. The leaders of Fernandina did not want a new community to grow and prosper to surpass their town. The leaders of Fernandina decided to move the town up to the railroad where the present-day Fernandina Beach stands. Yulee began construction of the railroad in 1855 and was completed in 1861.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"in-block\"><span id=\"Civil_War\" class=\"mw-headline\">Civil War<\/span><\/h4>\n<div class=\"thumb tright\"><\/div>\n<p>On January 8, 1861, two days before Florida&#8217;s secession, Confederate sympathizers (the Third Regiment of Florida Volunteers) took control of <a title=\"Fort Clinch\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fort_Clinch\">Fort Clinch<\/a>, already abandoned by the Federal workers who had been enlarging the structure. The Confederates erected <a title=\"Artillery battery\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Artillery_battery\">batteries<\/a> on the northern end of Amelia Island but lacked the resources to fortify Fort Clinch. <a title=\"Robert E. Lee\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_E._Lee\">Robert E. Lee<\/a>, who was commanding coastal defenses in the Deep South, ordered cannons and troops withdrawn in early 1862.<\/p>\n<p>Lee&#8217;s orders to withdraw the cannons and troops were too late. Union forces, consisting of 28 gunboats commanded by Commodore <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Samuel Dupont\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Samuel_Dupont\">Samuel Dupont<\/a>, occupied the island on March 3, 1862, and raised the American flag. In January 1863, the first all-black regiment of former slaves recruited to fight for the Union was read Lincoln&#8217;s <a title=\"Emancipation Proclamation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emancipation_Proclamation\">Emancipation Proclamation<\/a> at Fernandina. Three weeks later they set sail up the St. Marys River to engage the Confederate forces.
